Where it came from
The Promised Neverland anime was produced by studio CloverWorks and premiered in early 2019, adapting the first arc of the popular manga series written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu. The series emerged during a period of high demand for psychological thrillers within the shonen demographic, distinguishing itself through a dark, suspenseful narrative that subverted traditional tropes of the genre.
Director Mamoru Kanbe led the production with a focus on translating Demizu’s distinct visual style into a medium that emphasizes atmosphere and dread. The adaptation was met with significant critical acclaim, particularly for its pacing and the tension established in the opening episodes, solidifying its place as a standout entry in contemporary anime and marking a notable milestone for CloverWorks following their establishment as an independent studio.
