Where it came from
The Quack Infantry Troop, also known as the duck-themed soldiers in the 1944 animated short 'Commando Duck', emerged from the height of wartime propaganda production at Walt Disney Studios. Commissioned by the United States military, the short featured Donald Duck as a lone paratrooper tasked with destroying a Japanese airfield, reflecting the era's use of iconic cartoon characters to boost morale and foster nationalistic sentiment among both soldiers and civilians.
The animation was directed by Jack King, a seasoned Disney veteran known for his work on Donald Duck shorts. The design of the infantry troop relied on the classic, exaggerated aesthetic of mid-century studio animation, utilizing sharp, slapstick-driven visual gags to depict the absurdity of combat. While intended for serious wartime messaging, the film is now studied primarily as a historical artifact of how the studio navigated the intersection of mass-market entertainment and global political conflict.
