The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow

Released in 2014, The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow is a South Korean animated feature directed by Chang Hyung-yun. The film emerged during a period of experimentation within the South Korean animation industry, seeking to blend traditional hand-drawn aesthetics with surreal, imaginative storytelling that appeals to both children and adults. It was produced by Now Film and Joy and Content Group, intended to carve out a niche for high-concept, whimsical independent animation in a market often dominated by major studio exports.

The film's visual design is characterized by its quirky, lo-fi charm, intentionally deviating from the hyper-realistic CGI common in contemporary mainstream cinema. Chang Hyung-yun, who also wrote the screenplay, drew upon themes of loneliness and transformation to create a fable about a satellite that becomes a girl and a boy who transforms into a milk cow. While it received a modest theatrical release, it garnered significant praise from the festival circuit and critics for its eccentric narrative and heartfelt emotional core.
