The Sky Crawlers

The Sky Crawlers was produced by Production I.G and directed by Mamoru Oshii, released in 2008 as an adaptation of Hiroshi Mori's light novel series. Set in an alternate reality where war has been privatized to maintain a sense of peace, the film follows Kildren—genetically engineered fighter pilots who remain perpetually young. The project was conceived as a philosophical exploration of mortality, repetition, and the existential weight of living in a world defined by artificial conflict.

The film is highly regarded for its distinctive visual style, which integrates traditional cel-style animation with advanced 3D computer graphics to capture the kinetic intensity of aerial dogfights. Oshii collaborated with long-time associate Kenji Kawai for the score and worked closely with the studio's technical teams to ensure the aircraft maneuvers appeared grounded in physical reality.
