Where it came from
The Silver Guardian, or Yin Zhi Shou Mu, emerged in 2017 as a collaborative animation project between Haoliners Animation League and Japanese studio Emon. Based on the popular Chinese web comic of the same name, the series was designed to bridge the gap between traditional Chinese manhua and the aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese anime, reflecting a growing industry trend of cross-border animation production in the late 2010s.
The character design and visual direction were aimed at capturing the high-fantasy, gaming-inspired tropes prevalent in the medium at the time. While the series succeeded in bringing a well-known digital property to a wider television audience, it received mixed critical reception, with viewers often noting the challenges inherent in translating the expansive, fast-paced world-building of the source web comic into a structured episodic television format.
