Where it came from
The Sparrow with the Slit Tongue was produced by Gakken, a Japanese educational publisher that ventured into high-quality animation during the 1970s. This film is a direct adaptation of the classic Japanese folk tale Shitakiri Suzume, a morality story emphasizing kindness over greed, which has been a cornerstone of Japanese childhood literature for centuries.
The animation reflects the distinct aesthetic style favored by Gakken during this era, which often utilized subdued color palettes and traditional artistic influences to distance itself from the high-energy, commercial anime emerging concurrently. The production sought to preserve the folkloric atmosphere of the source material, resulting in a contemplative visual experience that was intended for educational and home viewing rather than theatrical release.
