Synopsis

The story follows a family of apple farmers: a mom, a dad, and their adoring son. The young boy idolizes his father and hopes to take part in the family business once he grows up. However, as he grows older and more rebellious, he begins to drift apart from his parents, trying to make it big in Tokyo as a musician. Meanwhile, his parents support him every step of the way, even when their son is absent, even when he is ungrateful, and especially when he begins to falter, all in spite of the struggles they are facing at the farm.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Story of a Family, released in 2013, is an original net animation (ONA) produced by the Japanese studio CoMix Wave Films. It was commissioned by the Japan Lutheran Evangelical Association as a promotional piece designed to communicate the organization's values and history through a medium accessible to younger audiences. The animation serves as a narrative vehicle to bridge traditional theological themes with contemporary life, emphasizing themes of connectivity, support, and the generational continuity of family structures.

The animation is characterized by the signature aesthetic of CoMix Wave Films, known for its meticulous attention to lighting, atmospheric detail, and expressive character design. By utilizing the ONA format, the production team aimed to achieve a soft, contemplative visual style that mirrors the gentle tone of the narrative. While it did not receive widespread commercial distribution, it was well-received within its niche context for its technical polish and its effective use of animation to convey emotional resonance in a short-form format.
