Where it came from
The Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura, known in Japan as Kotoura-san, was produced by the studio AIC and broadcast in early 2013. The series was based on the four-panel manga by Enokizu, which began serialization in 2010. The story centers on Haruka Kotoura, a girl gifted with the ability to read minds, a talent that causes her significant social alienation and personal turmoil throughout her upbringing.
The adaptation was directed by Masahiko Ohta, who sought to balance the narrative's heavy psychological themes with comedic and romantic elements. The aesthetic direction aimed to contrast the harsh reality of Haruka's isolation with the eventually supportive environment of her school's ESP Research Society. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its tonal shifts, moving between dark, emotionally taxing sequences and lighthearted school-life tropes.
