The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes

The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes was produced by Studio CLAP and released in 2022, serving as an animated adaptation of the award-winning light novel written by Mei Hachimoku. The project was helmed by director Tomohisa Taguchi, who sought to capture the ethereal, melancholic atmosphere of the source material while emphasizing the visual depth of the Urashima Tunnel, the story's central, time-warping location. Its production was characterized by a focus on high-fidelity lighting and color palettes that shift to reflect the emotional journey of the protagonists.

Upon its release, the film was noted for its introspective approach to the fantasy genre, shifting the focus from the mechanics of the tunnel itself to the interpersonal stakes for the lead characters. Critics often highlighted the film's polished aesthetic and the restraint in its narrative pacing. While it belongs to the broader category of Japanese youth-oriented science fiction animation, it was well-received for maintaining a singular, quiet tone that set it apart from more action-heavy contemporary works.
