Nils Holgersson is a young boy on a farm who is cruel to the animals. But when he catches the farm's little goblin it becomes one prank too many. He is magically shrunk and suddenly the farm animals are out for revenge. He flees on the back of the goose Morten and they join up with a flock of wild geese. Together they travel all over Sweden, with Nils hoping to find a way to become big again.
Note: The film was produced in 1982, but it didn't receive a theatrical release. It became available to the public in 1995 when it got a home release. It wasn't until January 2015 when it would see its first screening in theaters, more than three decades after its production.

Where it came from
Produced by Studio Pierrot and released in 1985, this film adaptation distills the narrative essence of Selma Lagerlöf’s classic 1906 Swedish children’s novel. While the 1980 television series remains the definitive animated treatment of Nils Holgersson’s journey across Sweden, this feature-length production was crafted to serve as a cinematic condensation for audiences who had already grown fond of the characters through various European broadcasts.
The animation reflects the aesthetic standards of mid-1980s Studio Pierrot, emphasizing a soft, pastoral visual style that mirrors the folkloric quality of the source material. By focusing on Nils’s transformation and his subsequent travels with the wild geese, the film maintains the moral and environmental themes of Lagerlöf's work, providing a more focused, rapid-paced experience compared to the episodic nature of the original series.
