Where it came from
The Thermae Romae x Yoyogi Animation Gakuin collaboration was produced as a promotional initiative centered on the anime adaptation of Mari Yamazaki’s hit manga series. Released around 2012 by DLE Inc., this collaboration served as a bridge between the popular historical comedy about bathhouse architect Lucius Modestus and the vocational training offered by the animation school. The project aimed to highlight the creative pipeline within the Japanese animation industry, inviting students to engage with the franchise’s unique aesthetic.
The design of this collaboration was heavily influenced by the distinct Flash-animation style popularized by DLE, known for its minimalist movement and comedic timing. By partnering with Yoyogi Animation Gakuin, the production sought to foster a sense of technical apprenticeship while maintaining the satirical charm of the source material. It was received as a lighthearted marketing effort that leaned into the quirky, educational-adjacent tone often found in Japanese promotional tie-ins of the era.
