Thermae Romae: Thermae Romae x LOFT Collaboration

The Thermae Romae x LOFT collaboration emerged from a partnership between the popular manga and anime franchise Thermae Romae and the Japanese lifestyle retailer LOFT. Produced in conjunction with DLE, the studio responsible for the series' distinctive flash-animated style, these collaborative items were created to capitalize on the franchise's cultural relevance and its playful exploration of Japanese and Roman bathing cultures. The products were marketed to fans looking for functional yet humorous merchandise that reflected the series' commitment to comfort and leisure.

The design of the collection leans into the aesthetic of Mari Yamazaki’s original manga, often featuring the protagonist Lucius Modestus in various states of surprise or professional contemplation. By pairing the franchise's iconic imagery with the clean, utilitarian design language common to LOFT’s store aesthetic, the collaboration sought to bridge the gap between niche otaku culture and everyday domestic living. Upon its release, the collection was well-received by fans for its tongue-in-cheek approach to daily self-care rituals, reinforcing the manga’s underlying message of finding relief in the bath.
