Thermae Romae: Thermae Romae x Asahi Shimbun Digital Collaboration

The Thermae Romae collaboration with Asahi Shimbun Digital was conceived as a promotional initiative to bridge the gap between historical Japanese newspaper reporting and the comedic, bath-obsessed world created by Mari Yamazaki. Launched to coincide with the popularity of the anime adaptation produced by DLE, the project utilized the protagonist Lucius Modestus to draw modern audiences into the archives of the Asahi Shimbun, framing historical newspaper entries as if they were Roman discoveries.

The design aesthetic maintains the distinct, somewhat exaggerated art style of the DLE-produced anime, characterized by its sharp lines and comedic facial expressions. By positioning the classical Roman architect within the context of 20th-century Japanese journalism, the collaboration aimed to highlight the evolution of public information. It was received as a lighthearted marketing experiment that successfully leveraged the cross-cultural appeal of Yamazaki's work to engage younger readers with traditional print media heritage.
