Where it came from
Those Years I Opened a Zoo is a Chinese ONA series based on a popular web novel by the author Luan. Produced by Haoliners Animation, the adaptation emerged during a period of significant growth for the Chinese animation industry, which saw an increasing number of web novels being transitioned into stylized 2D and 3D animated formats. The series focuses on a protagonist who inherits a struggling zoo, only to discover that the animals within are mythical creatures requiring specialized care.
The character design and visual direction lean into the vibrant, comedic aesthetic common in modern donghua, focusing on the dynamic between the human lead and the anthropomorphic, often temperamental, magical creatures. Upon its release, the production was noted by fans of the genre for its faithful adaptation of the original source material's tone, which balances lighthearted office-style humor with elements of the fantasy and supernatural genres.
