Where it came from
Thousand Autumns, or Shan He Jian Xin, is a Chinese animated series adapted from the web novel of the same name by author Meng Xi Shi. Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and animated by Motion Magic, the series debuted in 2021 as part of Tencent's broader initiative to adapt popular danmei literature into high-fidelity 3D animation. The production was aimed at capturing the intricate wuxia aesthetics and the complex philosophical tension between the two lead characters, Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi, within the historical backdrop of the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to emphasize traditional Chinese sensibilities, focusing on flowing robes and fluid, gravity-defying combat choreography characteristic of the genre. Upon release, the series was well-received by the domestic audience for its technical animation quality and fidelity to the character dynamics of the source material. It remains a notable entry in the influx of 3D-animated series emerging from the Chinese streaming landscape, specifically highlighting the growth of CG animation studios in representing classic martial arts narratives.
