Futaba Odagiri is the energetic transfer student who befriends Teru Hayama, the class president who is meaner than she looks, and Youko Nishikawa, a former rich girl who still acts like a princess. Three very different girls who only share one thing: the kanji for leaf in their names. Balancing school and life is hard enough, but what about dealing with clashing personalities on top of it all?

Where it came from
Three Leaves, Three Colors, known in Japan as Sansha Sanyou, originated as a four-panel manga series by Cherry Arai, which began serialization in 2003. The anime adaptation was produced by studio Doga Kobo and directed by Yasuhiro Kimura, debuting in the spring of 2016. Doga Kobo is recognized for its specialty in the slice-of-life and comedy genres, and for this project, the team aimed to translate Arai's long-running comic into a vibrant, character-driven television series that captured the distinct, contrasting personalities of its three young leads.
The series focuses on the daily interactions between Futaba, Teru, and Yoko, a trio of high school girls whose personalities are as different as their names suggest. The design philosophy emphasized bright, clean aesthetics typical of contemporary studio output to reflect the lighthearted nature of the source material. Upon its release, the adaptation was received as a faithful and well-animated entry in the slice-of-life genre, praised for its comedic timing and its ability to maintain the energy of a manga originally conceived over a decade prior to the show's broadcast.
