Where it came from
Three Little Ghosts, known in Japan as Chiisana Obake Acchi, Kocchi, Socchi, was produced by Studio Pierrot and premiered in 1991. The series was based on the popular children's book series by Kazuo Kasuno, which follows the lighthearted adventures of three friendly ghosts who interact with the human world. It was designed as a gentle, episodic program intended for a younger television audience, reflecting the whimsical and non-threatening aesthetic common in early 1990s Japanese children's animation.
The character designs were faithful adaptations of Kasuno’s original illustrations, focusing on rounded, approachable forms that emphasized the friendly nature of the protagonists rather than traditional horror tropes. Studio Pierrot utilized a bright, clean palette to ensure the series remained visually inviting for its target demographic. Upon release, the show was well-regarded for its gentle storytelling and served as a standard entry in the studio's portfolio of family-oriented television programs.
