Thunderbolt Fantasy: Touriken Yuuki × Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-

The Thunderbolt Fantasy: Touriken Yuuki × Touken Ranbu -ONLINE- collaboration project emerged from a unique crossover event between Nitroplus's Touken Ranbu browser game franchise and the wuxia-inspired puppet series Thunderbolt Fantasy. Created to celebrate the mutual creative history shared by writer Gen Urobuchi and the Nitroplus studio, the production utilized the specialized Japanese-Taiwanese glove puppetry known as Pili puppetry to reinterpret the famous sentient swords of the Touken Ranbu universe within the high-stakes narrative style of the Thunderbolt Fantasy world.

The design of these puppets was handled by the Pili puppet artisans in collaboration with the Good Smile Company, who oversaw the meticulous recreation of the characters' intricate costumes and weaponry for the screen. The aesthetic goal was to maintain the hyper-stylized elegance of the Touken Ranbu character designs while adapting them to the distinctive articulation and grand physical presence required for puppetry. Upon its release, the collaboration was well received by niche audiences for its technical craftsmanship and for successfully bridging the gap between two distinct Japanese pop culture phenomena through traditional puppetry techniques.
