Thunderbolt Fantasy: The Sword of Life and Death

Thunderbolt Fantasy: The Sword of Life and Death was released in 2017 as a film expansion of the popular wuxia puppet series created by Gen Urobuchi. Produced in collaboration with the renowned Taiwanese puppet studio Pili International Multimedia, the film serves to bridge narratives and flesh out the intricate backstories of the series' primary characters through the medium of traditional glove puppetry, elevated by high-definition cinematography and digital effects.

The production sought to blend traditional Asian puppet theater, known as 'budaixi,' with a modern, high-octane cinematic approach typical of Japanese anime. The character designs maintain the elaborate, ornate aesthetics expected of the Pili style, which were then translated into the film's visual language by the creative team at Good Smile Company and Nitroplus. Upon release, the film was received as a technically impressive achievement that demonstrated the viability of puppetry as a medium for serious, character-driven fantasy drama.
