Tian Long Ba Bu

Tian Long Ba Bu, or Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, is a seminal wuxia novel by Jin Yong first serialized in the 1960s. The 2021 ONA adaptation, produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, serves as a contemporary animated reimagining of this complex tapestry of martial arts, Buddhist philosophy, and historical intrigue set during the Northern Song Dynasty. It was developed to capitalize on the enduring cultural relevance of Jin Yong’s literature by utilizing modern 3D computer animation to visualize the story’s intricate combat sequences and sprawling character arcs.

The animation style and production design were overseen by a creative team at Tencent with the goal of balancing traditional aesthetic sensibilities with the high-fidelity expectations of modern digital viewers. The series aimed to provide a fresh visual language for the classic narrative, focusing on fluid motion for its choreographed fight scenes while maintaining a sense of gravity consistent with the genre's heritage. Upon its release, the project was recognized for its technical ambition in bringing such a dense, multi-protagonist narrative into the ONA format, appealing to both long-time enthusiasts of the franchise and new audiences.
