Where it came from
The To LOVE-Ru OVA series was produced by studio Xebec and released starting in 2009, serving as a direct continuation of the television anime adaptation of Saki Hasemi and Kentaro Yabuki’s popular manga. These episodes were released in an original video animation format, allowing the production team to explore more mature thematic content and visual styles that were slightly restricted during the original television broadcast run.
The character designs for the OVA were overseen by the animation staff at Xebec, who aimed to maintain the high-energy, slapstick aesthetic of the source material while refining the visual fidelity for the home video market. Upon release, the OVA was well-received by the established fanbase, providing a transition period between the first and second seasons of the franchise and solidifying the series' status as a staple of the harem comedy genre.
