To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts

To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts, known in Japan as Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e, was produced by Studio MAPPA and premiered in 2019. Adapted from the manga series by Maybe, the narrative explores a post-Civil War landscape where soldiers transformed into powerful, monstrous Incarnates—or Sacred Beasts—struggle to reintegrate into a society that no longer has a use for their wartime abilities. The production sought to capture the melancholic tone and gritty, dark fantasy aesthetic of the source material, emphasizing the psychological toll of a conflict that leaves the victors as tragic outcasts.

The series is noted for its exploration of themes concerning political betrayal and the ethics of warfare, framed within an alternate history reminiscent of 19th-century industrialization. MAPPA’s animation direction focused on balancing high-stakes action sequences with the somber emotional arcs of the protagonists, Hank and Nancy. Upon its release, the series received attention for its grim premise and distinct departure from lighter shonen tropes, though it prompted varied critical discourse regarding the pacing of its adaptation from the original serialized manga.
