Where it came from
Tokyo Babylon 2021 was conceived as a modern reimagining of the iconic 1990s manga series by CLAMP. Produced by Studio GoHands, the project aimed to update the dark urban fantasy narrative for a contemporary audience, shifting the setting from the bubble-economy era of the original to the year 2021. The production was intended to introduce the supernatural struggles of Subaru Sumeragi to a new generation of viewers through updated animation techniques.
The adaptation faced significant scrutiny regarding its artistic direction and character design choices, which departed notably from the original manga's aesthetic. Following the public revelation of plagiarism concerning the character costume designs, the production committee halted the project in late 2020. Consequently, the series was officially canceled, and the initial production at GoHands was scrapped, making this specific iteration a notable case study in the complexities of modern anime development.
