Where it came from
Tokyo Babylon was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse in 1992, adapting the popular manga series by the creative collective CLAMP. The two-part original video animation (OVA) project serves as a dark, psychological exploration of the spiritual and social decay within 1990s Tokyo, focusing on the protagonist Subaru Sumeragi, a young onmyoji tasked with protecting the city from supernatural threats while grappling with his own isolation.
The character designs were handled by the artists of CLAMP, aiming to translate their signature elegant and slender aesthetic into a medium that emphasized the bleak, atmospheric tone of the urban fantasy narrative. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its artistic ambition and its poignant handling of mature themes, effectively establishing the dark, melodramatic foundation that would later be expanded upon in the sequel series, X.
