Where it came from
Tokyo Mew Mew New was produced by Yumeta Company and Graphinica to mark the twentieth anniversary of the original magical girl franchise created by Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi. Released in 2022, this reboot serves as a modern adaptation of the late 1990s and early 2000s manga series, aiming to introduce the story of Ichigo Momomiya and her teammates to a new generation of viewers with updated animation techniques and character designs.
The creative direction for this series sought to balance nostalgia with contemporary aesthetic trends in the mahou shoujo genre. While the narrative remains faithful to the core themes of environmental protection and teamwork found in the original source material, the visual presentation reflects modern digital production standards. Upon its release, it received a mixed but generally appreciative reception from long-time fans who sought a refined version of the classic story, as well as new audiences discovering the series for the first time.
