Tongari Boushi no Memole: Marielle no Housekibako

Released in 1985 as a direct-to-video sequel to the popular television series Tongari Boushi no Memole, this OVA titled Marielle no Housekibako serves as a special epilogue to the story of the tiny, pointy-hatted Memole and her human friend, Marielle. The original television series, produced by Toei Animation and directed by Osamu Kasai, was celebrated for its whimsical aesthetic and gentle, poignant storytelling centered on friendship and cross-cultural discovery. This OVA was crafted to provide fans with a final, nostalgic look at the characters, maintaining the visual charm and emotional warmth established during the series' initial broadcast run.

The character designs, characterized by soft, rounded features and distinct, playful outfits, were spearheaded by Michi Himeno and Shingo Araki, a legendary duo whose work defined much of the aesthetic of 1980s Japanese animation. Their approach prioritized expressiveness and a sense of wonder, aligning with the show's focus on the perspective of the diminutive Memole. The production was well-received by the existing fan base, who appreciated the continuity of the artistic style and the opportunity to revisit the quiet, magical world that the animation team had meticulously built over the preceding year.
