Tong Zhi Zhe

Tong Zhi Zhe, often known by its English title The Leader, was produced by Tencent Animation & Comics to commemorate the bicentennial of Karl Marx's birth. Released as an ONA in 2018, the project was part of a broader cultural initiative in China to modernize the presentation of communist ideology for younger digital-native audiences, moving away from traditional textbook approaches toward a more cinematic, biographical storytelling style.

The animation features a distinctive aesthetic that blends historical drama with the high-production values common to contemporary Chinese web animation. It depicts the formative years and intellectual evolution of Karl Marx, focusing on his friendship with Friedrich Engels and the development of his foundational political theories. While it was produced under the oversight of state-backed media organizations, the design choice to utilize animation was specifically aimed at bridging the generational divide by making historical figures more relatable and visually compelling to a youth demographic.
