Where it came from
Tori no Uta is a prominent visual novel song originally composed by Shinji Orito for the 2000 game Air by Key, which gained widespread acclaim for its emotive quality. The 2007 OVA adaptation by Toei Animation was created to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the source material, reinterpreting the visual narrative for a broader audience. It serves as a distillation of the game's core themes regarding loss and connection, presented through the high-production aesthetic that defined Toei's work during the mid-2000s.
The production sought to capture the ethereal, melancholic atmosphere of the original visual novel, leaning into a nostalgic visual palette. The design of the animation emphasizes soft lighting and character-driven storytelling, aiming to translate the static beauty of the game's sprites into a moving medium. Critics and fans generally received the adaptation as a sincere, if abbreviated, tribute to the original game's iconic soundtrack and emotional weight.
