Where it came from
Toritsukare Otoko, or The Obsessed Man, was produced by Bandai Namco Pictures and released in 2025. The film serves as a feature-length adaptation of the celebrated short story by author Tomihiko Morimi, known for his surreal explorations of obsessive habits and the eccentricities of urban life. The project was conceived to translate Morimi’s idiosyncratic narrative style into a visual medium, focusing on the protagonist's singular, all-consuming quest that defines his existence.
The film's visual design aims to capture the distinct, whimsical atmosphere characteristic of Morimi’s literary adaptations. By utilizing a fluid animation style, the studio sought to emphasize the psychological interiority of the lead character and the shifting reality of his surroundings. Upon its release, the work was noted for its faithfulness to the source material’s tone, balancing a dry, contemplative humor with the underlying tension of the protagonist’s relentless fixation.
