Where it came from
Totonoe! Sakuma-kun was produced by Kachidoki Studio and released in 2023 as a short-form anime series centered on the sauna experience. The title emerged from the rising popularity of the sauna subculture in Japan, known as sauna-ikigai, and serves as a lighthearted exploration of the practice of 'totonou', a meditative state of mental and physical clarity achieved through the sauna-cold bath-rest cycle.
The series features the titular character, Sakuma-kun, who acts as a guide to sauna etiquette and enjoyment. The character design is rooted in the distinct, minimalist aesthetic of &sauna, a media project dedicated to promoting sauna culture. By emphasizing the simple joys of a sauna session, the animation aims to demystify the experience for newcomers while providing a humorous, relatable touchpoint for seasoned sauna enthusiasts.
