Transformers: Energon

Transformers: Energon debuted in 2004 as the second installment in the Unicron Trilogy, a collaborative effort between the Japanese animation studio Actas and Hasbro. Produced as a sequel to Transformers: Armada, the series was designed to explore the integration of 3D computer-generated imagery with traditional 2D cel animation. This stylistic choice aimed to showcase the evolving nature of robot transformations while maintaining the aesthetic traditions of the long-standing franchise.

The series served as a strategic vehicle for Hasbro to market a new line of toys that featured an 'Energon' gimmick, emphasizing a connection system that allowed figures to combine and swap limbs. While the narrative sought to expand upon the lore of the Transformers universe by focusing on the harvesting of a vital energy resource, the experimental animation techniques and complex toy mechanics received a mixed reception from fans and critics, who often highlighted the visual contrast between the character designs and their digitized environments.
