Where it came from
Transformers: Robots in Disguise, known in Japan as Car Robots, was produced by NAS and animated by Studio Gallop. It was commissioned to bridge a gap in the global Transformers market, serving as a standalone series that departed from the ongoing Beast Wars narrative. The intent was to return to the classic premise of vehicles transforming into robots, blending a lighter, anime-inspired tone with high-octane action sequences that appealed to a younger demographic.
The character designs were overseen by the creative team at Studio Gallop, who focused on a distinct, vibrant aesthetic that prioritized toy-like proportions to align with the accompanying Hasbro and Takara merchandise lines. The series was notably well-received for its humor and episodic structure, providing a fresh departure from the darker storylines of its predecessors and helping to revitalize the franchise's popularity in international markets at the turn of the millennium.
