Where it came from
Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs originated as a light novel series written by Yomu Mishima and illustrated by Monda. First appearing on the user-generated content site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2017, the story was later acquired by Micro Magazine for physical publication. It explores the subversion of common isekai tropes, casting its protagonist into a hostile, matriarchal game world where he must utilize his meta-knowledge to survive as a background character.
The 2022 television anime adaptation was produced by studio ENGI, a subsidiary of Kadokawa. Directed by Kazuya Miura and Shin'ichi Fukumoto, the production aimed to balance the satirical tone of the source material with the visual conventions of classic otome game aesthetics. While the series received mixed reviews for its animation quality, it remains a notable example of the contemporary 'mob' sub-genre, which focuses on characters intentionally positioning themselves as secondary figures to avoid the dangers typically faced by traditional heroes.
