Where it came from
Treasure Island, aired in 1978, stands as a notable production from the esteemed studio Madhouse, helmed by director Osamu Dezaki. This adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel was crafted to bring a cinematic, dramatic flair to children's television, utilizing Dezaki's signature 'post-card memories' technique and dynamic visual stylings. It was created during a period when Japanese animation studios were increasingly looking toward Western literary classics for ambitious, long-form storytelling projects.
The series is highly regarded for its artistic ambition, characterized by its mature tone and detailed character designs. The production team aimed to transcend typical adventure tropes, focusing instead on atmospheric tension and complex character arcs. Upon release, it was lauded by critics for its sophisticated direction and atmospheric score, cementing its status as one of the most respected anime adaptations of a canonical literary work from the 1970s.
