Cacao, a student at Micro Grand Academy, wakes up one morning to find a girl made of wood sleeping in bed with him. She is Hinano, a tree spirit who possessed the body of a wooden puppet after Cacao messed up his magic teacher's spell. Having taken an instant liking to Cacao, Hinano enrolls in his school. Between Hinano, monsters, two strange twins and their four-eyed cat master, a demon boy, odd teachers and students, and the fact that he may have the potential to be one of the greatest magic users of all time, Cacao's life seems to have taken several turns for the worse...and the weird.

Where it came from
Trouble Chocolate was produced by AIC and Studio Robot, premiering in Japan in 1999 during a period of experimentation within the late-nineties anime landscape. The series was conceived as a lighthearted, supernatural comedy centering on the misadventures of a high school student named Cacao, whose life is upended by a magical accident involving experimental chocolates. It emerged from a cultural moment that favored zany, chaotic humor and character-driven hijinks, positioning itself as a whimsical counterpoint to the more serious dramatic series dominating the market at the time.
The character designs and visual direction emphasized a vibrant, expressive aesthetic typical of the era’s television productions. While the series sought to engage viewers through its slapstick pacing and eccentric world-building, its reception was nuanced; it became a cult favorite among audiences who appreciated its offbeat tone, though it remained a niche title compared to the breakout hits of the same year. The series occupies a curious place in the history of studio collaborations, reflecting the creative restlessness that defined the turn of the millennium for animation houses.
