Where it came from
True Beauty originated as a highly popular South Korean webtoon written and illustrated by Yaongyi. First serialized on Naver Webtoon in 2018, the story follows a young woman who masters the art of makeup to transform her appearance and navigate high school life, eventually leading to a dramatic exploration of self-esteem and identity. Its immense popularity led to its adaptation into an ONA and a live-action television series.
The production of the associated digital media was spearheaded by Cocktail Media, which sought to translate the webtoon’s distinct visual style—characterized by polished, fashion-forward character designs—into a dynamic animation format. The work is widely recognized for its commentary on South Korean beauty standards and the emotional pressures of social media, receiving significant critical attention for its blend of romantic comedy tropes and more serious subtext regarding societal expectations.
