Where it came from
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle was produced by the studio Bee Train and debuted in 2005, adapting the popular manga series created by the artist collective CLAMP. The project was conceived as an ambitious crossover experiment, intentionally weaving characters from CLAMP's expansive bibliography into a multi-dimensional fantasy narrative. Studio Bee Train was tasked with balancing this dense lore with a sweeping, episodic adventure structure that spanned multiple distinct worlds.
The animation design was crafted to reflect CLAMP’s signature aesthetic, characterized by elongated proportions, intricate costume details, and a distinct reliance on ethereal lighting. The series was met with significant attention from the global anime community, largely due to its high-profile pedigree and the curiosity surrounding how disparate storylines would intersect. While the adaptation was praised for its ambitious musical score and visual commitment to the source material, it also faced criticism from long-time fans regarding the creative liberties taken with the pacing and narrative structure of the original manga.
