There are several ways to score in rugby, but a "Try", where a player touches the ball to the ground inside the opposing team's goal area while remaining in contact with it, is the hardest. It's also the way that earns the most points and sets up yet another way to score, a conversion. Riku Haruma, who played rugby when he was younger, has a conversion of his own when he sees the school's struggling team practicing on field. Although he's not big enough to keep up with powerful players like Akira Kariya, Riku has far more experience and, when a bit of offered advice causes an immediate improvement, Riku realizes that what the team really needs is leadership.

Where it came from
Try Knights was produced by Studio GONZO and premiered in 2019 as an original anime project focused on the sport of rugby. The series was developed to coincide with the 2019 Rugby World Cup hosted by Japan, aiming to capitalize on the increased national interest in the sport. The narrative follows Riku Haruma, a high school student who becomes fascinated by the tactical depth of rugby after witnessing a player named Akira Kariya, attempting to blend character-driven drama with the physical intensity of the sport.
The character designs were conceptualized by the manga artist Rihito Takarai, known for her distinctive and delicate aesthetic style. Despite the studio's attempt to highlight the strategic nuances of rugby, the series received mixed reception from audiences and critics, often drawing commentary regarding the animation quality and the pacing of the matches. It remains a notable example of an anime production specifically commissioned to build excitement for a major international sporting event.
