Where it came from
Tsubasa to Hotaru originated as a shojo manga series by Nana Haruta, serialized in Ribon magazine beginning in 2013. The story follows Tsubasa Sonokawa, a high school girl who finds herself unexpectedly managing the boys' basketball team after a chance encounter with Aki Hida. Given the series' popularity among readers, it was adapted into a special anime episode by studio J.C.Staff in 2014, designed to capture the series' earnest, heartwarming tone and character dynamics.
The 2014 special was produced as a short film to accompany a special issue of Ribon, intended to bring the manga's visual style to life for its existing fan base. J.C.Staff focused on maintaining the light, romantic atmosphere characteristic of Haruta's artwork, using soft color palettes and expressive character designs. The adaptation was well-received by fans for its faithful translation of the source material's gentle aesthetic and the chemistry between the primary cast members.
