Where it came from
Tsubasa to Hotaru is an anime special produced by J.C.Staff in 2016, based on the popular shojo manga series by Nana Haruta. Originally serialized in Ribon magazine, the story follows Tsubasa Sonokawa, a high school girl who finds a new sense of purpose after helping an injured basketball team member. This special adaptation was commissioned to accompany the manga, aiming to bring Haruta's distinct visual style and heartwarming character dynamics to life through animation.
The production sought to capture the gentle, emotional resonance of the original source material, emphasizing the delicate interplay between the characters. J.C.Staff utilized a soft color palette and expressive character designs that mirrored Nana Haruta's ink work, creating a nostalgic atmosphere consistent with the tone of mid-2010s shojo romance. Upon release, the special was well-received by fans of the manga for its faithfulness to the source text and its ability to condense the series' charm into a brief, standalone format.
