Provenance

Where it came from

Tsurupika Hagemaru-kun originated as a long-running manga series by Shinbo Nomura, which began serialization in 1985 before being adapted into this 58-episode anime series in 1988. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation, the show focused on the daily life of Hagemaru Hanada, a primary school student whose family is comically obsessed with frugality. The series captured the cultural anxieties of the late-Showa period, using hyper-exaggerated humor to depict the lengths to which a household might go to save money.

The character design remains iconic for its stark, minimalist simplicity, featuring a bald head and oversized features that emphasized the protagonist's eccentric personality. Nomura’s work was widely received as a lighthearted satire of domestic austerity, and the 1988 animation successfully translated the manga's gag-heavy style into a fast-paced episodic format that resonated with young audiences across Japan during the late 1980s.
