Tsurune: For Better or Worse

Tsurune: For Better or Worse was produced by Kyoto Animation in 2019 as an original video animation (OVA) serving as the fourteenth episode of the Tsurune series. Based on the light novel series by Kotoko Ayano, the production sought to extend the narrative of the Karano High School kyudo club following the conclusion of the television series. The animation team maintained the studio's signature focus on atmospheric detail and the nuanced physical mechanics of archery, aiming to capture the meditative and disciplined nature of the sport.

Directed by Takuya Yamamura, the episode was designed to bridge the gap between the character growth observed in the first season and the subsequent theatrical film. The visual direction emphasizes the sensory experience of kyudo, utilizing deliberate pacing and ambient sound design to ground the emotional stakes of the competition. It was received by the audience as a faithful continuation of the series, praised for maintaining the high aesthetic standards and character-driven focus that define Kyoto Animation's reputation in the slice-of-life genre.
