Turn A Gundam

Turn A Gundam was released in 1999 as a commemorative project to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gundam franchise. Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the series marked a departure from the established aesthetics of the universe by introducing a unique, pastoral tone and a complex, interconnected timeline. Tomino sought to weave together the disparate histories of all preceding Gundam iterations into a single, cohesive narrative structure, exploring themes of historical cycles and the remnants of lost civilizations.

The character and mechanical designs are notable for their unconventional approach, particularly the titular mobile suit designed by American industrial designer Syd Mead. Tasked with creating a machine that broke away from the traditional, rigid mecha aesthetic, Mead utilized fluid, organic lines and a minimalist color palette, most distinctively the mustache-like faceplate. While the design initially polarized fans accustomed to the more aggressive silhouettes of the series' past, it has since earned widespread critical recognition for its avant-garde influence and artistic significance.
