Ubasuteyama

Ubasuteyama, often known internationally as The Ballad of Narayama, originates from the 1958 film directed by Keisuke Kinoshita. Adapted from the 1956 novella by Shichirō Fukazawa, the film tells the somber folk tale of an elderly woman who, following village tradition, must be carried to a mountain to die once she reaches the age of seventy. Kinoshita chose to frame the narrative through the stylization of kabuki theater, utilizing painted backdrops, deliberate stage-like lighting, and a narrator to emphasize the artificiality of the folkloric setting.

The design and aesthetic choices were highly unconventional for their time, drawing heavily on traditional Japanese performing arts to contrast the harshness of the story's theme. Upon its release, the film was praised for its visual ingenuity and became one of the few Japanese films of the era to be nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. It remains a significant piece of mid-century Japanese cinema, noted for its tension between theatrical artifice and the brutal realism of its subject matter.
