Where it came from
Typhoon Noruda was released in 2015 as the debut theatrical feature from Studio Colorido, a production house known for its distinctively vibrant, painterly aesthetic. Directed by Yojiro Arai, a former animator at Studio Ghibli, the film was developed as part of the studio's initiative to showcase the talents of younger creators within the anime industry. It emerged during a period of experimentation for the studio, which sought to blend traditional cel-style animation with contemporary digital compositing techniques.
The film's visual identity reflects Arai’s intent to capture the atmospheric tension of a looming natural disaster through a coming-of-age lens. By focusing on the emotional resonance between two middle-school friends against the backdrop of a supernatural storm, the design emphasizes fluid character movement and detailed background art. While it was received as a modest, atmospheric project rather than a commercial juggernaut, critics frequently praised its technical ambition and served as a foundational building block for Studio Colorido's subsequent acclaim.
