Uchitama?! Have you seen my Tama?

Uchitama?! Have you seen my Tama? was produced by studio MAPPA in collaboration with Lapin Track and released in 2020. The series serves as a modern reimagining of the classic 1980s character property Tama and Friends, which originally debuted as a stationery line by Sony Creative Products. The production was conceived to celebrate the long-standing cultural relevance of the Tama character by anthropomorphizing the beloved pets into human forms, shifting the focus from a simple slice-of-life narrative to a stylized character-driven comedy.

The character designs were overseen by Tomohiro Nakayama, who aimed to translate the distinct visual cues of the original animal counterparts—such as specific coat patterns or accessories—into contemporary fashion-forward human designs. The series was met with interest from long-time fans of the original franchise and audiences drawn to the lighthearted, episodic nature of the adaptation. By blending the sentimental legacy of the 80s property with the polished animation standards of contemporary studios, the series sought to introduce the classic characters to a new generation.
