Where it came from
Uchuu Hikoushi no Uta, or 'Song of the Space Traveler,' originated as a prominent musical segment for the long-running NHK children’s program Minna no Uta. Premiering in the early 2000s, the piece was developed to blend the network's legacy of educational, arts-focused programming with a contemporary, melancholic aesthetic intended to resonate with both children and adults.
The visual accompaniment for the song was directed by Koichi Chigira and features character designs by the acclaimed illustrator Range Murata. Murata’s signature style—characterized by intricate, retro-futuristic technology and soft, emotive character expressions—was pivotal in creating the segment’s distinct atmosphere. The work was well-received for its artistic maturity, often cited by fans of Japanese animation for its sophisticated color palette and poignant, introspective tone.
