Uchuu Enban Dai-Sensou

Uchuu Enban Dai-Sensou, or 'Great Space Flying Saucer War,' was produced by Toei Doga and Dynamic Planning in 1975 as a short theatrical film. Directed by Yugo Serikawa, this production serves as the essential prototype for the landmark anime series UFO Robot Grendizer. It was conceived as a proof of concept for the character of Duke Fleed and his robot, Gattaiger, establishing the core aesthetic and narrative foundations that Go Nagai would later expand upon in his expansive mecha universe.

The character designs and the mechanical concept for the Gattaiger were crafted under the vision of Go Nagai, whose work in the 1970s defined the Super Robot genre. The film is remembered today by animation historians for its experimental tone and its role in bridging the gap between earlier iterations of Nagai's concepts and the massive cultural phenomenon that Grendizer would eventually become. While it was overshadowed by the subsequent television series, it remains a vital piece of the studio's developmental history.
