Where it came from
Released in 1989, Uchuu Bouei-tai Taabou no Toki no Tomatta Hoshi—often referred to as 'Space Defense Force Taabou: The Planet Where Time Stood Still'—is an original video animation (OVA) produced by Studio Deen. It serves as an adaptation of the popular children's character Taabou, created by Sanrio. The production was intended to capitalize on the character's immense popularity in Japan during the late 1980s, positioning the cheerful, bald-headed boy as a relatable hero for a younger audience.
The animation features a whimsical design style consistent with Sanrio’s aesthetic at the time, emphasizing bright, soft visuals and a lighthearted narrative structure typical of children's programming in that era. It was directed by Hiroshi Sasagawa, a veteran of the animation industry known for his work on various family-oriented series. The OVA was received primarily as a niche collector's item for Sanrio enthusiasts, reflecting the company's broader strategy of extending their character brand identities into home video media.
