UFO Senshi Dai Apolon II

UFO Senshi Dai Apolon was produced by Eiken in 1976, emerging during the mid-seventies boom of the super robot genre in Japanese television. The series was created by Tetsu Shirai and reflected the era's fascination with space-faring heroes and giant mecha, utilizing a unique premise where the protagonist, Takeshi, could transform into the giant robot itself rather than merely piloting it, a mechanic that set it apart from contemporaries like Mazinger Z.

The series design leaned into the bold, colorful aesthetic common to mid-70s animation, characterized by a fusion of sports motifs—specifically American football—and science fiction. While the production is remembered by enthusiasts for its experimental merging of genre tropes, it remains a niche entry in Eiken's portfolio, often overshadowed by the studio's more pervasive, long-running properties like Sazae-san.
